Mr. Don Wittenberg, a longtime curator of the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center (HAMEC) in Elkins Park (Cheltenham Township), passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5. He was 79.
Mr. Wittenberg graduated from Olney High School in 1964 and Temple University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education in 1969, according to his obituary.
In addition to 25 years with HAMEC, Mr. Wittenberg was an educator for 42 years in the School District of Philadelphia, as well as a member, former treasurer and president of B’nai B’rith Educators Unit of Philadelphia.
“He was honored by the Columbus Forum as the first recipient of their Unity Award for fostering cultural awareness,” his obituary said. “He was committed to traditions of his faith as an active congregant of numerous synagogues.”
From HAMEC’s post:
Don’s dedication, knowledge, and passion shaped the heart of our museum and the experiences of countless visitors, researchers, and volunteers. Through his careful stewardship of the collection and his generosity in sharing history, he helped preserve and tell the stories that define our community.
For a quarter of a century, Don was not only a curator but also a mentor, colleague, and friend. His impact on HAMEC and on everyone who had the privilege to work with him will not be forgotten.
