Glenside resident to lead Philomusica Chorale’s ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame’ anniversary concert on May 3

Gayle Wieand of Glenside is celebrating her 20th year at the podium of the 60-member Philomusica Chorale on Saturday, May 3 at 7:30pm at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia.

The 45th anniversary concert, titled “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”, includes several Glenside residents.

“It seems only natural that two favorite pastimes would find ways to overlap,” Wieand, an avid football fan, said.

As conductor and artistic director of the Chorale, Wieand has commissioned local composers, engaged in unique artistic collaborations, created a welcoming place for children, and carried music to underserved audiences.

As a performer, she spent several years singing soprano in operas locally and in concert halls across Europe. She later led church choirs and community choruses and has taught voice, piano, clarinet, theory, and composition to hundreds of adults and children (who affectionately call her Miss Gayle).

Wieand earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Temple University. As a composer, her Sacred Service, an extended work for chorus, soloists and instrumental ensemble, premiered in 2010 to coincide with the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia. Her full-length composition, With Every Breath, premiered in 2019. She also directs the Philadelphia Women’s Music Project.

The regional Chorale has a majority of members coming from Northwest Philadelphia and the surrounding Montgomery County neighborhoods.
