Shaquille Monroe, 32, of Philadephia, was found in possession of an illegal gun and roughly one pound of marijuana following a traffic stop in Abington Township on January 20, 2025, The Reporter said.
The investigation began after Abington police saw Monroe’s 2013 Dodge Dart changing lanes with its emergency hazard lights activated in the 600 block of Old York Road. Officers pulled the vehicle over “for a traffic infraction and to check on the condition of the operator,” The Reporter said.
During the stop, police said they smelled marijuana and saw “pieces of broken down marijuana” on the car’s floor. Monroe declined a search of the vehicle, which was then towed. A search warrant revealed a semiautomatic Ruger handgun which had been reported stolen in New York as well as roughly one pound of marijuana, drug packaging materials, and a digital scale.
Monroe did not possess a medical marijuana card and was ineligible to possess a firearm based on a prior felony conviction, The Reporter said.
Monroe pleaded guilty to a felony charge of person not to possess a firearm and faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison on the charge. A judge has deferred sentencing so that court officials can complete a background investigation report about Monroe.
