Jenkintown Borough Zoning Hearing Board to hear first application under new short-term rental ordinance

Jenkintown Borough has received a Zoning Hearing Board Hearing request under its short-term rental ordinance.

According to borough manager George Locke, the ordinance was first approved on April 23, 2025. The hearing will take place during the Zoning Hearing Board meeting on July 23.

A “short term rental” is defined as:

Any rental dwelling unit owned or managed by a person, firm or corporation that is rented for a period of less than 30 consecutive days, but not more than 120 days in any calendar year. Rooming units and rooming house are included in this definition when rented for a period of less than 30 consecutive days, but not more 1 than 120 days in any calendar year. Any rental dwelling unit rented for a period of less than 30 consecutive days for 120 or more days in any calendar year shall be deemed a hotel.

“The Planning Commission and the county all worked on it for awhile,” Locke said. “I think it has a lot of good controls. It’s now 11 pages, which is a lot for an ordinance of this type. “

Locke said a new resident recently bought a home and wants to run it as an Air B&B.

“This will be the first property that will go through the ordinance. There’s one of Greenwood Avenue as well,” he said.
