Jefferson Health to expand MossRehab and relocate some of Einstein’s services to Abington Hospital & Philly

Jefferson Health recently announced changes to Elkins Park’s Einstein Medical Center and MossRehab.

MossRehab will expand in-patient physical rehabilitation services, and the Einstein Medical Center’s acute care, surgical, and emergency room services will be relocated to Jefferson Abington Hospital and Einstein’s Medical Center in Philadelphia.

The transition is expected to take place in early June.

From Jefferson Health’s press release:

As part of its commitment to deliver high quality, compassionate and equitable care, Jefferson Health will expand in-patient physical rehabilitation services at MossRehab at Elkins Park. In addition, Jefferson’s Einstein Medical Center – Elkins Park will transition acute care, surgical and the emergency room services to Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and Jefferson Abington Hospital.

Beginning in June, in-patient rehabilitation patients at Jefferson Abington Hospital will begin receiving care at MossRehab at Elkins Park, leveraging the world-class rehabilitation services provided by MossRehab. The underutilized acute care, surgical and emergency services at Einstein Elkins Park and increased demand for physical rehabilitation services have created an opportunity to repurpose the Elkins Park campus to provide enhanced services through MossRehab. Forecasted growth for inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation services are expected to see significant growth over the next decade, both locally and nationally.

MossRehab, recognized by U.S. News & World Report, as one of “America’s Best” rehabilitation facilities is a national leader in providing innovative physical rehabilitation care to patients from this region and beyond. The scope of physical rehabilitation services has grown, as has the need for inpatient care. This transition of services creates a unique opportunity to expand the delivery of rehabilitation care at a centralized location.

Moving in-patient rehabilitation services to MossRehab, will enable Jefferson Abington Hospital to add 23 general medical beds to that campus, improving the patient experience and decompressing the emergency department. The transition of acute care services from Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park will begin in June. The emergency department at the Elkins Park campus will officially transition services on June 30. Patients can access emergency care at nearby locations including Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia (Level I Trauma Center) and Jefferson Abington Hospital (Level II Trauma Center).
