Cheltenham Township will host a ribbon cutting for the official opening of a new stretch of the Tookany Creek Trail and new signalized traffic crossing at 12:30pm on Saturday, April 18.
The event will include a community fair along the trail at Gimbel Field (276 Harrison Avenue, Elkins Park) from 12:00 to 1:00pm with brief remarks. Following the ribbon cutting, attendees are invited to walk the stretch of trail with ice cream.
The newest section of trail stretches .44 miles between Harrison Avenue and New Second Street and was funded with support from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission ($400K), the Federal Transportational Alternatives Program ($700K), and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources ($150K).
A new traffic signal—50% funded through a $200,000 MontCo 2040 Implementation Grant—was installed at New Second Street and Tookany Creek Parkway to provide safe crossing from this segment to the existing trail along the Parkway to Central Avenue.
The new trail is the first of Cheltenham’s trail segments designed to meet Circuit Trail specifications.
The event will immediately follow the township’s “Fight Blight” Cleanup Day.
