Jefferson Abington the source of over 24 lawsuits in Philly courts since 2023

Jefferson Abington Hospital is the source of more than two dozen lawsuits in Philadelphia since the beginning of 2023, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

According to the story, a recent legal change has prompted more than a dozen medical malpractice lawsuits from incidents that took place as far away as Scranton and York to be filed in Philadelphia court every month due to the city’s history of multimillion dollar verdicts.

“Between January 1, 2023, and April 2024, more than 40% of 657 medical malpractice complaints initiated in Philadelphia were based on care provided outside the city,” the Inquirer said. “Not surprisingly, there are now fewer malpractice cases being filed in suburban counties. In Delaware County, for instance, the number of suits fell by more than half, to 32 in 2023 from 67 in 2022.”

In July, Jefferson Abington was issued an “immediate jeopardy warning” after determining a security guard used excessive force against a psychiatric patient on April 23.

In related news, Bayada Home Health Care Inc. has agreed to pay $13.5 million to its nurses. A Bayada Assistive Care is currently operating in the Willow Grove section of Abington Township.
