Jefferson Abington celebrates pre-med program graduates

Jefferson Abington Hospital recently celebrated its 65th class of pre-med program graduates.

The hospital has offered this program since 1959 to provide first-hand experience to college students interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

Over the course of several weeks in the summer, students shadow employees in various hospital departments and attend weekly lectures on topics, such as patient safety, medical ethics and the medical school application process.

Students also have the chance to participate in optional activities, including observing a surgery and attending hospital rounds.

According to the hospital, many former participants have gone on to medical school, some returning to Jefferson Abington Hospital as residents, physicians and nurses.
