Hunter Soccer Club of Glenside welcomed home one of its most celebrated alumni last week as former Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin returned to the Clubhouse to speak with our Travel Committee & Coaches. For many in the room, it felt less like a guest lecture and more like a full‑circle moment— as one of the nation’s most respected soccer minds came back to the place where his love of the game first took shape.
Curtin shared stories from his journey: growing up in the Glenside area, learning the game on our fields, earning his way into Major League Soccer, and ultimately becoming one of the league’s most successful and admired coaches. But the heart of his message wasn’t about trophies or titles. It was about grassroots soccer—the everyday work of community clubs, volunteer coaches, and the environments that shape young players long before they ever step onto a collegiate or professional pitch.
He spoke candidly about the coaches who influenced him here at Hunter, the importance of creating positive, player‑centered experiences, and the responsibility youth coaches carry in nurturing confidence, resilience, and joy. “The foundation matters,” he told the room. “Clubs like Hunter are where kids fall in love with the game. That’s the real beginning of every soccer journey, and that’s what they remember first.”
Curtin also shared some great candid insight on his own successes and failures during his soccer journey as a player and coach, and provided tips about how each one of our coaches should approach their role in cultivating the sport and setting proper expectations along the way. For our Travel Coaches, the evening was equal parts inspiration and affirmation. Curtin’s humility, insight, and deep appreciation for his roots reminded everyone why community clubs like Hunter remain the heartbeat of Youth Soccer.
Having Jim Curtin back in the Clubhouse wasn’t just an honor—it was a reminder that the work happening on our fields every week truly matters. And for the next generation of Hunter Soccer Club, his story is proof that big dreams can start right here at home.
