Gov. Shapiro may see pro-Palestinian protests if he gets the nod, according to the NYT

Governor Josh Shapiro was featured by the New York Times today in an article titled “Pro-Palestinian Groups Seek to Thwart Josh Shapiro’s Chances for Harris’s V.P.

Described as “an observant Jew” and “seen as bringing plenty of upsides to the Democratic ticket”, the article discusses potential opposition to his Vice Presidency from pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

Democratic frontrunner Kamala Harris is expected to name her running mate ahead of a rally on Tuesday, August 6 in Philadelphia. According to the Times, protests “by a motley collection of left-wing and pro-Palestinian activists” could follow if Shapiro gets the nod.

“Harris needs to win Pennsylvania, signal moderation and reassure Haley voters that she’ll stand up to the left,” said Representative Jake Auchincloss, a Massachusetts Democrat and a Jewish military veteran who is referring to Republican supporters of Nikki Haley. “The more the Twitter left piles on him, the more helpful he is to Harris.”

The article notes that Shapiro’s stance on the Israel-Gaza war “is not all that different from any of the other Democrats under consideration … or from Ms. Harris’s.”

“I don’t blame them for wanting to engage and speak out,” he told NBC News in a November interview. “I think that’s really healthy. I think it’s incumbent upon them to know some history and not just enter the conversation in recent weeks but go back and understand what happened in the past.”

If elected vice president, Shapiro would be the highest-ranking Jewish official in U.S. history, according to NBC.
