Maeve Falcone, a Glenside resident and a sophomore at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School, has launched a fundraiser on behalf of her best friend Chloe, a freshman at Abington Senior High School who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2023.
The fundraiser, which is part of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s 2025 Student Visionaries of the Year campaign, began January 23 and runs through Thursday, March 13.
“When my school leadership program approached me about this opportunity, I immediately thought of Chloe and I knew it was a way I could make a difference for her and for many,” Falcone told Glenside Local. “As I watched her battle, I knew that by my fundraising I could help her and other people with this type of cancer. It has made me realize that I cannot only fundraise but one day I hope to go into pediatric nursing to help children, like my friend Chloe.”
In fall of 2023, Chloe was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Falcone said, after which she began to learn about the disease.
“I also began to see the immediate effect it took on her, her family, her friends and our entire community,” Falcone wrote in a fundraising letter. “As she battled, I began my own research and stayed connected with her and her family, almost daily, to learn about her battle and her long road ahead. When I learned about an opportunity to join this campaign, I knew it would be a way for me to continue to help her fight this battle as well as help others who are battling along with her.”
