Glenside native Michael Siani, MLB centerfielder, helps younger brother Sammy through early season slump

Glenside native Sammy Siani, who plays for the Altoona Curve, has been seeking older brother Michael Siani’s advice to get out of an early-season slump, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported.

According to the Gazette, Sammy went 1 for 22 with a solo home run in the Curve’s first six games.

“I know he’s got the talent and I know he’s got the ability to do it,” Michael, an outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, said. “Just little things like, ‘Don’t give at-bats away. Have a plan when you go up to the plate every time you do hit and just enjoy it. And take advantage of every opportunity you get.’ That’s the advice I took from people before me … as I moved up through the minor leagues and got to the big leagues.”

The brothers played together at William Penn Charter before Michael, a year older, was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He signed for $2 million.

Sammy was the 37th overall pick in the 2020 draft and received a $2.15 million signing bonus. He batted .254 with the Curve last season, though he hit .375 in the Arizona Fall League, the Gazette said.

“People can get called up from Double-A all the time, so it’s always in the back of your head,” Sammy said. “But [I’m] not focusing too much on that kind of stuff and just focusing on taking care of each and every day, one step at a time.”

He spent the offseason training in Florida with Michael, who belted the first homerun of his Major League Baseball career in May 2024.

“Taking care of the body is gonna be really important,” Sammy said, “and just being able to continue to be the gap-to-gap guy I can, taking care of the little things on defense and keep pushing myself to the big leagues.”
