Former Cheltenham resident sentenced for animal neglect after several dead cats were found in her apartment

Chawana Sandra Robinson, 51, formerly of the 7300 block of Sycamore Avenue in the Elkins Park section of Cheltenham Township, was sentenced to three years of probation after multiple dead cats were found in her apartment in July 2024 after she was evicted, The Reporter said.

Robinson pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of neglect of animals.

The investigation began on July 8, 2024, when Robinson’s landlord contacted the Montgomery County SPCA “to report a large amount of abandoned and neglected cats that were left in the front apartment of the address,” according to a criminal complaint filed by Cheltenham Police Officer Matthew Bugieda.

Robinson had lived at the apartment for 12 years, The Reporter said, noting that numerous cats were left behind after she moved out.

From the article:

With assistance from a Humane Society officer, the landlord initially removed 8 live cats, some of which had been found in a hole in the bathroom, and one deceased cat from the residence between July 8 and July 17. On Sept. 2, the landlord informed police that one of his employees found two additional deceased cats that were severely decomposed behind a washing machine in the apartment.

Additionally, a severely decomposed cat and “a cat in a mummified state” were found in the basement, and a deceased cat was found under a bathtub
