Western Pennsylvania-based The Daily Courier has written about two former teachers in the Abington School District in an article titled “The story of the sock”.
In the early 1960s, now-retired Andrea Swan had just started her career as a fifth-grade teacher at an Abington elementary school. Mimi Ford, her best friend in college, had also landed a job in Abington teaching third grade.
According to the article, a man’s black sock with red and gray diamonds got mixed in Swan’s clothing at a Philadelphia-area laundromat, and the teachers “traded that sock back and forth for 61 years.”
“That was the beginning. I can’t even tell you why I took it home,” Andrea said.
Three years later Andrea moved to Connellsville, PA, where she finished out her teaching career. Ford now lives in Florida, but the two have stayed in touch. The sock, which has traveled as far as Ben Roethlisberger’s locker at the former Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, is still exchanged.
