Developer of 222 Church Rd in Cheltenham appeals resolution approving six-acre housing development

Cheltenham Township shared last week a land use appeal of the resolution passed by the township’s board of commissioners on March 15, 2023, which approved a land development application for 222 Church Road in Elkins Park.

Plans for the development date back to October 2021 following the property’s sale for $1 million. In 2022, the township allowed conditional approval to split the six-acre lot at 222 Church Road into ten lots and allow for the building of eight Single Family Dwellings for lots 1-8, family home and accessory structure to remain on Lot 9, and the final lot to be dedicated to Cheltenham Township.

In April 2022, WHYY ran a story citing resident opposition to the proposed construction of eight townhomes. In March 2023, the Elkins Park Neighborhood Coalition, an environmental conservation organization, circulated a petition in opposition to the development.

Henry Sekawungu, Cheltenham Township’s director of zoning and planning, told Glenside Local that the Court of Common Pleas ruled in favor of the applicant and upheld the resolution that had been passed by the board.
