Cheltenham Township Historical Commission welcomes insights on ‘The Lost Stairs of Wall Park’

The June 2024 issue of The Ivy Today, the newsletter of the Cheltenham Township Historical Commission, included a short description of “The Lost Stairs of Wall Park”.

According to the Commission, one of the park’s abandoned staircases is close to the Church Road bridge over Tookany Creek and the railroad and appears to have led to a footbridge over the creek.

Two additional sets of stairs lead down from the field to the creek. The first is roughly 100 yards downstream from the first set of stairs, and the second set is at the end of a row of old trees by the tennis courts, the Commission wrote.

“Perhaps these were in place for general recreation in the creek in the days before swimming pools. They are made of local stone,” the newsletter said.

Their original purpose is unknown. The stairs aren’t safe to walk on, the Commission noted.

If you know anything about them, feel free to email the Commission at wallhouse@cheltenhampa.gov or leave your thoughts in the comments.
