Cheltenham police and the Montgomery County District Attorney announced that 23-year-old Kareem Reed of Spring Garden was arrested in connection to straw purchasing and trafficking firearms. Reed has been charged with multiple felonies.

Police recovered a Glock 23 from an April 16 shooting in Wyncote, which DA Steele says may have been used in a Philadelphia carjacking earlier that day. The gun came from a person under the age of 21.

The gun was not reported stolen or lost, leading investigators to conclude it was a “straw purchase,” or the purchase of a firearm through a third person to evade a background check and conceal the identity of the owner.

Officials connected the gun to a purchase made by Reed on June 20, 2021. Further investigation revealed that Reed bought four firearms between April 7, 2021, and November 13, 2021, three of which were bought at a gun store in Chalfont and one of which was purchased in Lafayette Hill.

According to officials, Reed illegally instructed his customers to remove the guns’ serial numbers.

Reed is charged with unlawful sale/transfer of a firearm, dealing in the proceeds of unlawful activities and obliterating/altering marks on a firearm, as well as a misdemeanor charge of materially false statements to authorities.

Reed is currently in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 22.
