Cheltenham High School’s EPIC program hosts 1st annual Friendsgiving celebration

The Empowerment Program in Cheltenham (EPIC) at Cheltenham High School in Wyncote hosted its first annual Friendsgiving celebration on Thursday, November 20.

The event was curated by EPIC paraeducator Shanaye Tucker, who coordinated with staff, students, and local partners to create an afternoon centered on connection, community, and gratitude.

Held during EPIC’s Dress for Success Day, the gathering gave students and staff an opportunity to enjoy a shared meal, play games, dance, and reflect on what they are thankful for ahead of the Thanksgiving break. Dress for Success Day—celebrated every Thursday at EPIC—encourages students to take pride in their appearance and personal presentation while exploring a wide range of professional pathways through the program’s Career Series.

“My goal of hosting a Friendsgiving event was to bring our school community together for a warm, meaningful celebration that would foster connections, show gratitude, and allow everyone to feel a sense of belonging,” said Tucker. “This is my second year hosting events like this for students, and the smiles on their faces and the positive feedback make it all worth it. I’m thankful to work with such great people who want to see our students excel in all areas.”

The Friendsgiving meal was catered by Sheree’s Home Cooking, owned by Sheree Akers, a local business owner and mother of an EPIC student. Akers donated a full holiday-inspired spread including fried chicken, baked salmon, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, rice and gravy, string beans, Hawaiian rolls, and a selection of desserts.

Other EPIC staff members contributed additional food items and decorations. Students and staff shared expressions of gratitude during the event:

  • “I’m thankful for the love and support that the school has given me.” — Jeremy D., student
  • “I am grateful for my friends and all of the staff and Teachers here at EPIC.” – Essence E., student
  • “I’m thankful for EPIC and for being a vital part of this program.” — Teal Winstead, Mental Health & Wellness Counselor

“The EPIC staff and students are amazing. This Friendsgiving event shines a light on them, but this type of compassion and support happens at EPIC every single day,” Nick Choitz, a former Cheltenham resident and Life Coach and District Supervisor for We R H.O.P.E, said. “To say they go above and beyond for the students here is an understatement. I’m truly proud to be a part of this team and a part of this community.”
