Abington police chief clears confusion surrounding recent ICE/U.S. Marshals arrests

Abington Township Chief of Police Patrick Molloy clarified recent confusion involving alleged ICE activity in the area.

On Monday, Glenside Local reported that MontCo Community Watch, a grassroots organization that tracks local ICE activity, posted that a man was detained by ICE agents at 7:15am in Abington Township.

Later that day, Abington Township commissioner John Spiegelman reached out to Glenside Local to offer a correction to their report. Spiegelman said he had been in contact with Abington police who had told him the arrest “did not have anything to do with ICE or immigration at all,” he said on Monday.

The following morning, Spiegelman offered a correction to his correction, and said that that the incident in Roslyn was “entirely separate from the U.S. Marshals action” per new information from the Abington Township Police Department.

According to Chief Molloy, both reports were correct: Abington police assisted in a Thursday morning U.S. Marshals’ arrest of an Abington resident wanted for sexual assault. The arrest took place on Susquehanna Road in Roslyn, Chief Molloy said.

Chief Molloy confirmed that a separate ICE arrest of an Abington resident took place on Monday.

“They had a warrant for DUI, and there’s a system in place to triage a notification if they’re in violation of immigration status as well,” he said. “We received a complaint on Thursday from folks who thought that arrest was ICE. Our original understanding was that people were referring to the Thursday arrest. We later learned that a separate arrest took place on Monday.”

Chief Molloy noted that if residents want official responses to inquiries or requests regarding ICE activity in the area, they can reach out to Philadelphia.Outreach@ice.dhs.gov.
