Abington commissioner disconfirms alleged ICE detainment in Roslyn

Update: Commissioner Spiegelman said on Tuesday morning that the incident in Roslyn was “entirely separate from the U.S. Marshals action” per new information from the Abington Township Police Department.

According to Spiegelman, Abington police are working to get updated, verified information to residents regarding the incident. More information is expected to be shared soon.

Abington Township commissioner John Spiegelman offered a correction regarding MontCo Community Watch’s announcement that a man was detained by ICE agents at 7:15am on Monday in Roslyn.

Commissioner Spiegelman told Glenside Local the following after discussing the matter with Abington police:

“A witness may have misconstrued the operation. The operation did involve the U.S. Marshals, but did not have anything to do with ICE or immigration at all,” he said. “The Marshals had an arrest warrant. It was a suspect involved in a very serious criminal charge from New Jersey, who was located somewhere in Roslyn.”

Commissioner Spiegelman said Abington police received clarification from federal law enforcement.

“The staff member I spoke with had been in touch with federal law enforcement agencies,” Spiegelman said. “A staged federal arrest like this could very much look like an ICE action, but it was not. I have that on good authority.”
