Dr. Alex Levin, a 1974 graduate of Cheltenham High School, is now the Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester Flaum Eye Institute in Rochester, New York.
According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Dr. Levin is the only physician on the planet to simultaneously hold U.S. Board Certifications in pediatrics, ophthalmology, and child abuse pediatrics.
Well-respected and honored by his medical peers internationally, Dr. Levin has created the standard for diagnosis and treatment of the sight of children who suffer abusive head trauma.
From his University of Rochester biography:
Alex Levin, MD, MHSc, provides expert medical and surgical care to infants, children and adolescents suffering from pediatric anterior segment eye conditions (cataract, glaucoma, uveitis) as well as adults and children with genetic eye disease. As Chief of the Eye Institute’s Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Genetics team, and Chief of Clinical Genetics at URMC, he integrates his clinical expertise in treating eye disease with his scientific curiosity in understanding their genesis. Working with cross-functional teams of ophthalmologists, optometrists, pediatric specialists, geneticists, nurses, diagnostic technisicans and genetic counselors, he offers the most advanced compassionate care and advice to his patients and their families.
After graduating first in his class at Muhlenberg College with a B.S. in 1978, he earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University with a career goal of pediatrics. His medical residency at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) led to his specialty treating abused children.
After a year on staff at CHOP as a child abuse pediatrician, Dr. Levin then completed an ophthalmology residency program at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
Dr. Levin was a National Merit Letter of Commendation winner and a member of the school’s gymnastics team.
