Cheltenham girls’ basketball state championship teams of 2000, 2007 to be honored at halftime on Feb 4

The Cheltenham High School girls’ basketball state championship teams of 2000 and 2007 will be celebrated during halftime of the girls’ basketball game versus Springfield Township High School on Tuesday, February 4 in Wyncote.

Players from both teams and former coach Bob Schaefer are expected to be in attendance, the district said.

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, the 2000 Lady Panthers upset Pittsburgh Oakland Catholic 54-52 in the PIAA AAAA championship game at Hersheypark Arena. The team finished the season 32-1 and ranked 14th in the nation.

The 2007 Lady Panthers went 28-6 and defeated Council Rock North 68-54 at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College. The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame awarded the team with a “Pride of Philadelphia Team Award.”

Coach Bob Schaefer won 757 games in his 31-year tenure from 1981 to 2012. His 757 career wins still ranks sixth all-time in the state of Pennsylvania, Langerman said.

The Lady Panthers clinched the SOL Freedom Division title with Friday’s road win again New Hope-Solebury.
