Andrea Jones, a 2002 Cheltenham High School graduate and head coach of the Lady Panthers girls’ basketball team, opened her Wyncote coaching tenure with a 50-17 victory over Frankford High in the opening round of the 4th Annual Lady Panther Tip-off Tournament on Friday.
Senior Maya Simmons, a 1,000-point scorer, led all players with 15 points, including three three-pointers. On Saturday, Cheltenham lost 35-39 to Renaissance Academy High School.
According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Jones was a starting point guard on the 2000 PIAA girls’ AAAA championship team, the school’s first-ever state championship in Cheltenham High history in any sport, boys or girls.
Coach Jones is the first Lady Panther alumna to lead the program in 55 years. The last former Lady Panther to serve as head coach of the girls’ basketball team was 1949 graduate and Alumni Association Hall of Famer Adele Boyd in the 1960s.
