Catalytic converter thefts down significantly in our region, Montgomery County detectives’ investigation to continue

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently published an extensive piece regarding detectives’ takedown of a sophisticated multimillion-dollar catalytic converter theft ring that ran out of a Northeast Philadelphia from 202-2023.

In late June, authorities concluded a yearlong investigation with charges against 10 adults and one juvenile. Officials estimate that as many as 2,000 valuable car parts were stolen in our region via the operations of “kingpin” Michael Williams and his associates. Williams is the operate of TDI Towing in Port Richmond.

This year, the number of converters stolen in Philadelphia has dropped from 4,173 in 2022 to 1,802. Police believe the takedown of TDI Towing led to the drop.

The investigation is continuing in Montgomery and Bucks counties, with authorities potentially targeting other groups that may be stealing car parts. In July, our area saw a string of catalytic converter thefts, some of which took place in the Glenside train station parking lot.
