Camp William Penn Museum in Cheltenham Township feat. by CBS News

Camp William Penn Museum, located at 1618 Willow Avenue in the Elkins Park section of Cheltenham Township, was featured by CBS News as part of America’s 250th anniversary.

Camp William Penn was a Union Army training camp from 1863 to 1865 during the American Civil War. The museum honors the legacy of Pennsylvania’s only training camp for black soldiers during the war and is managed by the Citizens for the Restoration of Historical La Mott (CROHL).

James Paradis, the museum’s lead historian, told CBS News that Camp William Penn “was the first and the largest federal training camp for the volunteers.”

Bill Salvatore, Cheltenham Township’s parks and recreation director, said he planned a year’s worth of events to honor the nation’s 250-year history, among them Camp William Penn & Historic La Mott Day on September 19.
