Abington SD Hosts First Ever “Sixth Grade CommUNITY Day”

Abington School District

While each of Abington’s seven elementary schools has its own events to recognize this significant academic milestone, Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fecher announced earlier this month the first-ever, collective, Sixth Grade Community Day.

This event is designed for more than 600 sixth grade students from all seven Abington School District elementary schools, who make up the Class of 2025 to mark their transition from Elementary to Middle School.

This student event (rescheduled from today, May 28) will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Schwarzman Stadium at Abington Senior High School, from 10 a.m.—2 p.m.

During this event, students will take their very first class picture together. They will also meet their future Junior High classmates through ice-breaker activities and field-day games.

Background

While each of Abington’s seven elementary schools has its own events to recognize this significant academic milestone, Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fecher announced earlier this month the first-ever, collective, Sixth Grade Community Day.

During Dr. Fecher’s first few months of being Superintendent—a role he began in November—he has spent time visiting all of the District’s schools to hear directly from children regarding what they like best about their schools and what changes they might like to see. One of the recurring requests that he heard from students was their desire for opportunities to get together with their peers from other elementary schools before they become classmates at Abington Junior High School.

The Sixth Grade Community Day is a result of those suggestions, and will include fun games and get-to-know you activities, a barbecue lunch, and most importantly, an opportunity for sixth grade students to meet their future seventh grade classmates. Students will also be receiving a special surprise that morning to commemorate the event.
