Abington police arrest Cheltenham High School student carrying gun at high school football game

The Abington Township Police Department has announced that on August 25th at approximately 8:26 p.m. it arrested a juvenile male Cheltenham High School student for possession of a firearm during the Abington/Cheltenham football game that was underway at the Abington High School stadium. According to police, a parent notified police after noticing the male with the weapon.

When police approached the male, they located a loaded handgun with an extended magazine in his possession, along with a second loaded magazine. The juvenile was taken into custody and
escorted out of the area without further incident. No injuries were sustained during this incident.

It was mutually agreed that the football game would be suspended at halftime out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of the students and spectators. A heavy police presence remained in the area of the high school stadium ensuring all spectators left the area safely.

Due to the seriousness of this offense the suspect was detained by Montgomery County Juvenile Probation and charged with felony weapons offenses. He was transported to the Montgomery County Juvenile Center.
