Wells Fargo in Elkins Park to permanently close in September

The Wells Fargo bank at 341 W. Cheltenham Ave. in Melrose/Elkins Park will permanently close on September 23, The Philadelphia Business Journal reported.

According to their coverage, the location is one of two in the Philadelphia area and one of 18 across the country to close. 122 Wells Fargo branches across the country remain open.

A Wells Fargo spokesman said customers can still access an existing location about two miles away at 2401 W Cheltenham Avenue in Wyncote.

“As we optimize our branch network, we are focused on enhancing our branch presence based on customer demand and changes to the retail landscape to best meet the banking needs of each community we serve,” the spokesman said.

The bank has closed 61 local branches over the past 10 years while opening none, The Journal said. It was the region’s largest bank by deposits for years, though TD Bank now claims that title.
