Abington Township residents will see a property tax increase of 0.25 mills and a trash fee increase of $125 in 2026. For a home which has a county assessment of $165,000, the tax increase would be $41.25.
Reasons for the millage increase, the first in three years, are outlined below:
- Declining Assessed Value – Since 2018, the Township has seen its overall assessed value decline
resulting in under performance of the millage rate for budgetary purposes. - Reassessments – Willow Grove Mall Reassessment is estimated to impact the budget with a
revenue loss that could range anywhere between $985,000 to $1.3 million in FY 2026. - Pension Plan MMO – Due to changes in the Township’s pension plan mortality table, additional
pension costs are required through the MMO. These costs increased by $1.9 million over FY 2025
costs. - Transfer Station Bid – Changes in the recycling and solid waste market have had a direct impact on
the bids the Township received earlier the summer of 2025, while costs of equipment have
substantially risen since 2020. In order for the Township to continue to provide the same level of
service, an increase in the refuse rate was required. An increase of $125 has been factored into this
budget
Commissioner John Spiegelman noted in a newsletter that the increased trash fee is the first of its kind in a decade, and can be offset by downsizing to a smaller green trash cart. Requests for trash can exchanges can be made by contacting the Refuse–Recycling Division at 267-536-1036 or submitting a request at abingtonpa.gov/servicerequest.

In related news, Lower Moreland Township announced that starting in January 2026, the township’s new trash hauler will be AJ Blosenski.
Both trash and recycling collections will be automated by trucks using a mechanical arm.
“The handle of the bin MUST face your home and have a 4-foot clearance around it to be collected in a safe and proper manner, only the designated trash bin will be picked up,” township officials said in a statement. “Do not place the container near mailboxes, parked cars, utility poles, trees/brush, or other items that prevent clear access to the bins. Your new collection container is for the disposal of regular household trash only.”
The notice continues:
The twice-a-week trash collection and once-a-week recycling will continue, following the same schedule as the previous hauler. All residents will receive a 96-gallon trash container that will be delivered during the week of December 15. If residents prefer to swap out the 96-gallon container for a smaller container or purchase an additional 96-gallon container, a request can be made with the township starting April 1, 2026.
Old trash containers can be disposed of on the bulk pickup day. Residents can also drop off old trash bins at the Public Works building for disposal or repurpose them for yard waste.
If residents choose to use old containers for yard waste, please visit the township building to pick up a yard waste sticker that should be placed on the container.
Residents will continue to use the current recycling containers and will only receive new TRASH bins.
Bulk Collection and White Goods
Bulk collection will be picked up on the second trash collection day of the week, with no scheduling required.
White goods will be picked up on the 3rd Monday of the month. Residents need to obtain a sticker for the collection of all white goods.
Yard Waste
The Township Public Works Department will be collecting yard waste starting in April 2026.
- Wards 1,2,3 will receive service on Mondays
- Wards 4,5,6 will receive service on Tuesdays
Yard waste and leaves must be placed in a biodegradable bag or container up to 32 gallons. This container must have holes drilled in the bottom and have a designated yard waste collection sticker. Stickers can be obtained at the Township Building. Tree limbs placed curbside may not exceed a diameter of 2 inches, a length of 36 inches and the bundles may not weigh more than 50 pounds. Bundles must be cut into 3 foot sections and tied with manila rope or jute twine.
Christmas Tree pickup will be on the first three Mondays in January.
