The former El Limon at 222 N. York Road in Hatboro was issued a notice of violation for operating a commissary kitchen, which is not permitted under current zoning allowances. The location opened in 2022 and permanently closed in May.
A commissary kitchen, also known as a shared-use kitchen, is a licensed commercial kitchen facility that can be rented or leased by multiple food businesses, such as food trucks, caterers, or bakers.
El Limon’s owner submitted an appeal to the borough which maintains “that the kitchen is a commissary kitchen and has always been that while the restaurant was in operation,” borough manager Diane Hegele told Glenside Local.
The borough’s Zoning Hearing Board held a hearing regarding the property on July 9 but did not render a decision. Hegele noted that the space is not up for lease as the owner would like to continue the use of the kitchen to prepare food for their other locations.
The issue will be discussed with the Zoning Hearing Board during their meeting on August 13 at 7:00pm at Borough Hall, 414 S. York Road.
