Youth basketball tournament sponsored by inmate and shoe store owner to be held in Willow Grove on Aug. 9

Athletic Drip’s second annual All Star Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 9 at Crestmont Park in Willow Grove (2595 Rubicam Avenue, Abington Township).

According to newsitem.com, the tournament is sponsored by Thomas Coffee, owner of the Mount Carmel-based Athletic Drip shoe store. The first run was held in July 2024 and drew U18 players from Mount Carmel, Philadelphia, Willow Grove, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. Speakers included Philadelphia homicide defense attorney Teri Himebaugh and Eric Reynolds, father of NFL player and 2014 Abington High graduate Craig Reynolds.

Coffee has been incarcerated for nearly 10 years and uses the tournament as a way to help youth stay on the right path, according to a 2024 article by FOX56. He is currently serving a life sentence at a local state correctional facility.

“There was an incident in Philadelphia that had gotten him incarcerated in Mount Carmel PA, Coal Township area. It’s a situation of wrong place, wrong time, just being in a bad area,” his wife said (quote from newsitem.com). “He wants to let the kids know, you don’t always have to be guilty to be put in that situation. He wants to push them into a better direction, better life, focus on school.”
