The Hiway Theater in Jenkintown will kick off their inaugural (and monthly) Cult Cinema Club series on Saturday, August 2 with a showing of “Wild at Heart” (1990).
The series was recently featured by MovieJawn, who will be on site this Saturday.
“From genre classics, to deeper cuts from the small screen, this monthly club will cater to film fans that have a passion for the underground and midnight movie fare,” MovieJawn wrote. The article includes an interview with Grant Gow, the club’s programmer and founder. An excerpt:
RK: Tell us about Cult Cinema Club – why is it important to you?
GG: I grew up going to the Hiway and getting enamored with the classics and art house films that would screen, but I always wanted more of the so-called “late night fare” to play after those. I got part of my wish granted when we started Horror at the Hiway, now over three years ago.
I love that monthly Friday late night series so much (as of this interview I haven’t missed a screening in this series) but because it’s just horror, it boxes you in to what you can do. I knew our audience would have some crossover into cult cinema and that’s where Cult Cinema Club was born. I can’t express enough how much this is a dream come true. And we’ll have our neighbors at Human Robot selling beer in the lobby for you to enjoy during the screening. Truly a pitch perfect partnership.
I pitched it as a monthly, Saturday night series taking place at 9:45 and for it to never be in the same week as a Horror at the Hiway screenings. The idea was to show movies that you probably watched at home (likely on late night cable) while the rest of your family was asleep and maybe you were too young to watch it. Maybe it’s a title that was panned upon release that people have come back around on, maybe it’s a “so bad it’s good”, or maybe it’s still a controversial title. The films in this series will check all of these boxes and then some.
