Susan Miller, a resident of Elkins Park in Cheltenham Township, has been named president of Israeli women’s advocacy group NA’AMAT USA, The Jewish Exponent reported.
The organization provides for social services, legal services, domestic violence prevention, educational services, scholarships for women who want to extend their education. The name, NA’AMAT, is an Israeli acronym that stands for “Working and Volunteering Women,” The Exponent said.
Miller, a former family therapist who will begin a three-year tenure on March 30, said she joined as a life member of the organization at the first meeting she ever attended.
“I was raised a Zionist, and it was to the extent that my mother wouldn’t let me go to Israel when I was a teenager because she was afraid I wouldn’t come back,” Miller, longtime member of Beth Sholom Congregation, said. “Seven or eight years ago, two members of the community were introducing NA’AMAT in Elkins Park, and I was invited to join them at the first meeting. What appealed to me was hearing that the money raised in the U.S., Canada and [elsewhere] goes directly to projects in Israel for underserved Jews, Arabs and Christians.”
