6ABC Action News covered the Abington School Board controversy

6ABC Action News covered the controversy stemming from comments made by Abington School Board member Dr. Tamar Klaiman during a public meeting on January 21st. The comments, which she has since apologized for, were about police and student resource officers shooting people on a regular basis. Below is the 6ABC Action News report:

A few days after making the comments, Dr. Klaiman posted the following apology on her Facebook page:

On Tuesday night’s school board meeting an issue came up about which I have strong personal feelings. I am concerned about having firearms in schools, and the disparate impact of disciplinary actions on students of color. However, I said something that I deeply regret, and I would like to apologize. I am proud of the relationship between ASD and the police department in this community. I am also aware that Abington is a leader in community policing and building bridges. What I said was offensive, and I am sorry. The School Board is meeting with the police department and the school resource officers next week, and I plan to apologize to them in person, as well as the community at large. I am not perfect, and when I make a mistake, I am willing to own up to it and apologize. I look forward to a productive meeting next week, and having a positive relationship with the APD moving forward.

In response, Abington Township Chief of Police Patrick Molloy will be making a presentation during the February 4th meeting of the school board. It will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Abington Junior High School Little Theatre located at 2056 Susquehanna Road in Abington.
