Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park may house The Congregations of Shaare Shamayim of South Philadelphia

Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park may partner with The Congregations of Shaare Shamayim of South Philadelphia if a property sale goes through.

According to the Jewish Exponent, Shaare Shamayim is in the process of selling its Northeast Philadelphia location. If approved, Shaare Shamayim will move into a wing of Keneseth Israel with its own entrance, offices, a kosher kitchen and a sanctuary/social hall.

Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El has occupied the same location since 2012, the Exponent said, and will be merging with Congregation Adath Jeshurun on July 1.

The plan came after Shaare Shamayim received an “unexpected offer” of $5 million from a nearby church about six weeks ago.
