On Sunday, October 8 around 5:00pm, Upper Moreland Township police and EMTs responded to a call regarding a woman who was waving a gun outside of her home.
The woman was later identified as Mary Meister, 69, of the 100 block of Evans Avenue in Willow Grove. The name of the officer who shot Meister has not been released.
According to officials, Meister pointed the gun at medics and did not comply when asked to drop it. She then turned the gun on the officers and an officer shot her. Meister was taken to Abington Hospital and pronounced dead Sunday night.
Montgomery County detectives are investigating the shooting.
The Philadelphia Inquirer and NBC10 interviewed area residents. John Gavin, 77, who has lived in the area for about 50 years, said it was a quiet, safe neighborhood.
“I could hear the lady, the woman who was sitting on the porch,” a witness, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10. “The officers were saying, ‘Please put your gun down.’”
“She was shouting. She was yelling, talking loudly,” the witness said. “I think she said, ‘I’m talking to my daughter.’ The officer said, ‘We can talk to your family member. Can you give us the phone?’ And then I believe she fired four shots on the officers and then they returned fire.”
Another resident said that approximately 10 officers were present, four of whom with guns drawn and pointed at Meister’s house. A tense standoff began, with officers pleading with Meister as she was apparently on the phone with her daughter.
”There was an officer saying, ‘Please put your gun down. We’re here to help you,’ “ the neighbor said.
Shortly after, the neighbor heard four gunshots coming from the porch, and the officers quickly fired the same number of shots.
