Wine & Spirits Shoppe in Cheltenham reopened today, nine Philly stores remain closed

The Wine & Spirits Shoppe at 8156 Ogontz Avenue in Wyncote reopened today. The store was one of 48 state-run locations to be shut down after widespread looting in downtown northeast and west Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.

According to multiple news outlets, looters targeted 18 liquor stores following peaceful protests over a judge’s decision to dismiss all charges against a former Philadelphia police officer, Mark Dial, in the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Eddie Irizarry on August 14.

According to 6ABC, most of those stores were able to reopen Thursday, though nine remain closed, potentially for weeks.

“I don’t know if any retailer can be prepared for a situation like this,” said Elizabeth Brassell, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. “We did have 16 locations broken into over the last couple of days. With the exclusion of 10 stores that were so badly damaged that it’s going to take us some time to secure them.”
