Winder and Makhija win Democratic Party primary for Montgomery County Commissioner

Jamila Winder, who was appointed to serve out the term of Dr. Val Arkoosh (after her resignation) as a Montgomery County Commissioner and was the only candidate endorsed by the Montgomery County Democratic Committee, sailed to an easy victory with 54,744 votes (unofficial) in the Democratic Party primary for commissioner.

Voters had the opportunity to vote for two candidates who then advance to the general election. Claiming the second spot in the unofficial results is Neil Makhija who had 38,458. Makhija beat out Winder’s chosen running mate Kimberly Koch who received 31,105 votes.

Rounding out the results are Tanya Bamford with 24,309 votes and Noah Marlier with 17,055.

Winder and Makhija will now face Republicans Tom DiBello and Liz Ferry in the general election. In that election, voters can vote for up to two of the four candidates. The two members of the same party that are among the top three vote-getters form the majority, while the third seat is reserved for the candidate from the other party who wins the most votes.
