Willow Grove Park Mall’s Forever 21 to close for good, part of 200 shutdowns across the country

Forever 21, a multinational fast-fashion retailer with a location inside the Willow Grove Park Mall, is closing its doors in the near future.

F21 OpCo, which runs Forever 21 stores, has filed for bankruptcy protection for a second time and plans to close down its U.S. business as traffic in U.S. shopping malls fades.

“While we have evaluated all options to best position the company for the future, we have been unable to find a sustainable path forward, given competition from foreign fast fashion companies, which have been able to take advantage of the de minimis exemption to undercut our brand on pricing and margin,” Chief Financial Officer Brad Sell said in a statement.

“Through their chapter 11 cases, the Company will implement an orderly wind down of its U.S. business while continuing to conduct a marketing process to solicit interest in a going concern transaction or a sale of some or all of its assets,” the company said in a news release.

The store will remain open for now, but the company will begin liquidation sales.

“There is no set date that we’re closing, we’re just waiting to get bought out,” a store associate told Glenside Local.

A store closing sale was posted on the mall’s website earlier this month but has since been taken down.

A source told People Magazine that the company is “shifting toward a digital-first model” as it prepares to close as many as 200 stores.

Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices have been filed in California and Pennsylvania indicating mass layoffs, and the company may file for bankruptcy, according to the story.
