At an event held on September 19 at the Upper Moreland Library Community Room, members of the William Penn Chapter National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, (NSDAR) presented handmade Quilts of Valor to Clarence “Clank” Barnhill and Samuel Morgan.

Barnhill, from Philadelphia, PA, served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1965 to 1969 in Vietnam.  He was also stationed in Camp Lejeune and the Philadelphia Naval Yard. 

Morgan, of Richmond Hill, GA, is currently serving in the U.S. Army since 1999 including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Afghanistan. He received numerous recognitions including Distinguished Flying Cross having flown approximately 4,000 hours with 1,700 hours in combat. He is retiring in 2027.

The quilts were made through a collaboration of the William Penn Chapter and the Great Valley Chapter of the NSDAR. The William Penn chapter members who worked on the quilts included Sue Singer (pieced quilt panels) and Cynthia Ross (bound quilt).  Kathleen Conway, from Great Valley Chapter NSDAR, handled quilting, batting and backing.

A Quilt of Valor (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war.  “Each Quilt of Valor is a heartfelt expression of gratitude and a tangible reminder that the sacrifices of our veterans are remembered and appreciated,” said Sue Singer. “It was a privilege for our William Penn and Great Valley Chapter members to work together to create these quilts and present them to two deserving veterans. We hope these quilts bring comfort and serve as a lasting symbol of our appreciation for their service to our country.” The Quilts of Valor Program has donated more than 400,000 quilts to service members worldwide. Each veteran is also given a certificate.
