The Cheltenham Township Police Department announced that officers, EMS, and members of the fire department were dispatched to the 7900 Block of Chandler Road in Glenside at approximately 6:06pm on Saturday, July 6 for a report of a tree that had fallen on a child.
Responders on scene found that a two-year-old child had sustained critical injuries from a large tree branch that had fallen approximately 50 feet, including an amputated arm.
Lifesaving care was provided and the child was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the department said.
An initial investigation determined that the branch fell while a group of children were playing in the driveway.
Police said the incident appears to be accidental, but the case remains under investigation by Cheltenham detectives.
If anyone has any information regarding this incident, or may have been a witness, please call Cheltenham Police at (215) 885-1600 or email PoliceTips@CheltenhamPA.gov. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
The identity of the child is being withheld due to the child’s age, police said.
