Timeline extended for 2026 Property Tax/Rent Rebates applications

The filing deadline for 2026 Property Tax/Rent Rebates has been officially extended from June 30, to December 31, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue announced.

Pennsylvania seniors or people with a disability can receive up to $1,500 back on rent or property taxes while filing returns for the 2026 tax season. The program can be applied for online through myPATH, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue tax hub. Pennsylvanians can also visit pa.gov/ptrr to find information on the program and learn how to apply.

Rebates will be distributed beginning July 1, as required by law. As of May 15, the Department of Revenue has already received more than 400,000 rebate applications.

An expansion increased the maximum standard rebate to $1,000 (up from the prior $650 maximum), raised income eligibility limits for homeowners and renters, and tied the income limits to cost-of-living adjustments. The income limit for rebate applicants is now $48,110 — an increase of more than $1,500 from 2025.

“I’m proud to say that the expansion of the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program was one of the very first tax cuts that we pushed across the finish line — and it represented the largest targeted tax cut for seniors in nearly two decades,” Governor Josh Shapiro said in January.

Since its inception in 1971, the program has delivered nearly $9 billion in property tax and rent relief to some of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable residents. The program is funded with revenue from gaming.

In related news, select senior citizen homeowners may be eligible to receive tax relief via Abington School District’s Senior Citizen Tax Rebate Program, which is based on the Pennsylvania Property Tax Rebate. More details here and below:
