The future of Dreams Ice Cream in Glenside, located at 33 E Glenside Avenue, was uncertain for a few days.
Owner Lamar Smith’s lease is set to expire this year. Earlier this week, he was told by property management that he may not be able to renew due to a forthcoming construction project.
Plans for the demolition of parcels located at 29, 35, 105 and 115 E Glenside Avenue were first introduced in 2022. The construction of a single building is proposed in their place.
According to Henry Sekawungu, Cheltenham Township’s director of zoning, the applicant was granted an extension by the Zoning Hearing Board in 2023 and has until December 2026 to submit land development plans.
“I am not anticipating a submission anytime soon,” he told Glenside Local in an email.
Smith met with Cheltenham Township’s commissioners on Tuesday and is rolling with the punches.
“They said the paperwork associated with the project is going to take some time. It was a positive meeting. We’re just going day to day, month to month for now,” Smith said.
A fundraiser titled “KeepDreamsIceCreamAlive” has been launched in case a worst-case scenario plays out. $1,390 has been donated at the time of this writing.
“If we have to relocate, we want to stay in the Glenside area,” Smiths aid. “The outpouring has been amazing. You feel the impact you have. It’s a beautiful thing.”
