Cheltenham Township announced on the morning of Wednesday, February 12 that a hazmat cleanup was underway regarding a gasoline spill at York and Stahr roads.
According to First Responders, the spill infiltrated the township’s storm sewer system and Tookany Creek.
According to WHYY, 70 gallons of gasoline spilled from a delivery truck at the Sunoco gas station after it overfilled the tanks during an overnight delivery.
The area was immediately treated with a clay-based substance, though officials are uncertain as to how much gas got into the creek.
“The spill did cause a fish kill, but numbers are unknown,” Lauren Walter, the township public information officer, told WHYY.
Clean-up involves suctioning out the gas and flushing the creek with clean water.
“The situation is under control, but residents can still expect a lingering odor of gasoline in the area, as well as an odor from the dead fish likely for the next few days,” Walter said.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Fish and Game Commission have been notified.
