Springfield Township officials announced today that gas odor complaints, both indoors and outdoors, are being reported due to a high-pressure gas leak on the 1700 block of West Olney Avenue in Philadelphia.
Officials said the leak began around 8:15am on Thursday, February 20 when construction work at West Olney Avenue and 18th Street struck a gas line, releasing a cloud of smoke into the air.
As a precaution, La Salle University, Central High School and a nearby apartment building were evacuated, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department. Emergency crews are currently on-site working to contain the leak, and while no fires or injuries have been reported, the strong gas odor is affecting Wyndmoor and surrounding areas.
“Springfield Township residents do not need to report the gas smell for this incident to Police or the Township,” the township said. “Springfield’s Emergency Management team is monitoring the situation as it occurs. All other gas-related incidents can be reported to PECO at 1-800-841-4141.”
Cheltenham Township also published an announcement regarding the leak.
