Senator Haywood filing ethics complaint against Senator Mastriano for involvement in Jan. 6 riot

Democratic state Senator Art Haywood, whose office is in Abington Township, is planning to file an ethics complaint against Republican state Senator Doug Mastriano, ABC27 reported today.

Senator Haywood outlined his case against Mastriano during a Capitol press conference on Tuesday, January 2. His allegations include Mastriano’s efforts to discredit the 2020 election results and his attendance of the January 6 Capitol riot.

“He was part of a large, angry, armed, violent mob that was assembled to the Capitol for the purpose of overturning the election,” Haywood said.

Haywood thinks Mastriano’s conduct may violate the set of ethics rules adopted by the state Senate in 2023, and that an “ethics probe” may result in the reprimanding, censuring, and/or expelling of Mastriano.

During the news conference, Haywood said he had not addressed his complaints with Mastriano directly. When asked about the timing of the allegations, Haywood said he was waiting for facts courtesy of a report by DC-based “Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington,” the same group that successfully sued to remove Donald Trump from the ballot in Colorado.

“I can say that that love includes accountability,” said Haywood during the conference. “Love includes discipline and love without accountability. And discipline can just be something less than that. So I do not consider this to be a unloving position.”
