PSU Abington expected to survive widespread Commonwealth campus closures

Penn State Abington is expected to survive widespread Commonwealth campus closures, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today.

While the number of closures across the state is uncertain, the decision to shut them down is a response to declining enrollment, Penn State University officials said. None will close before the end of the 2026-27 year.

“It has become clear that we cannot sustain a viable Commonwealth Campus ecosystem without closing some campuses,” Neeli Bendapudi said in a statement to the campus community Tuesday.

Enrollment at the Commonwealth campuses was at about 24,000 in June 2024, down about 30% since 2010. The decline in first-year enrollment this year was 8.4%, or 578 students.

Across all its campuses, Penn State’s overall enrollment last fall stood at just under 88,000, The Inquirer said.

The university intends to close a $191 million deficit by this summer and is on track to finish this fiscal year with a balanced budget, a university spokesperson said in December.

Penn State Abington is among the system’s largest, The Inquirer said. The campus now features a new $68 million academic building.
