Philmont Country Club to host public events, construction of 176 townhomes moves forward

Initial construction for an adult housing community with 176 townhomes on the grounds of the Philmont Country Club in Lower Moreland Township began last month.

“They’re doing all the shaping and retention ponds. It’s an engineering feat right now. They’re moving a lot of soil around,” Chris Wegner, the PGA’s general manager, said.

The project’s developer is anticipating a 2026 finish. The beginning of the homes’ construction will probably take place at the end of this year, Wegner said.

The Huntingdon Valley club is converting one of its two golf courses to make room for the development.

“We were lucky enough to have two golf courses here. 10 of the holes are being converted into housing. Another 4 holes were sort of donated for infrastructure projects. We’ve used another 4 holes to expand our practice facilities,” Wegner said. “The North course was designed in 1924 and has always been one of the best courses in Philadelphia. So we kept that course and expanded on it.”

The South course is the club’s original and dates back to 1906.

Philmont Country Club is looking to expand its event offerings to the wider community as well.

“We’re expanding our catering operation to host events for the community. We’d like people from Lower Moreland, Glenside, Abington, and Jenkintown to take part in some events that have been member-exclusive,” Wegner said.

Upcoming events will include Easter brunch, Valentine’s, Mother’s and Father’s Day seat-ins, a possible “scotch and cigar night”, and a Red Cross Blood Drive on January 17.

“We’re creating a community with the townhomes, but we want to be a community center where people can come to us for events,” he said.

Recent investments to the property include a refurbished ceremony location, an improved member pub and pool patio, and the entirety of the club’s catering building.
