Philly man, shot in the shoulder after assaulting Cheltenham police officer this morning, has been arrested

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele recently announced the arrest of Calvin Yim, 27, of Philadelphia, for Attempted Murder and charges related to the assault of a Cheltenham Township Police Officer.

The incident took place earlier today at approximately 9:00am in the 500 block of Bridle Road.

According to the DA’s press release, Yim punched the officer in the face and head and attempted to grab their service revolver. As the officer and defendant wrestled for control of the firearm, a shot was fired striking Yim in the shoulder. Yim ran into the nearby woods and was quickly apprehended by Cheltenham Police.

The name of the police officer involved is not being released at this time.

The Cheltenham Township Police Department announced today that “there is no danger to the public at this time. Police will be in the area for the next several hours conducting an investigation. If anyone witnessed the incident, please contact Cheltenham Police as soon as possible.”

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announces the arrest of Calvin Yim, 27, of Philadelphia, for Attempted Murder and other charges related to an assault on a Cheltenham Township Police Officer, where the officer’s firearm discharged striking Yim. Per protocol, the DA’s Office will investigate the discharge of the police officer’s weapon.

At 9:01 a.m., Saturday, April 22, 2023, the 911 operator dispatched Cheltenham Township Police for a call of a suspicious male walking along Twickenham Road. Cheltenham Police responded and located the male in the 500 block of Bridal Way. The initial investigation by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau and detective’s review of bodycam footage found that the officer exited his patrol car, approached Yim and ask him to sit down to talk. Yim responded by immediately punching the officer in the face and head and attempting to grab the officer’s service revolver. As the officer and defendant wrestled for control of the firearm, a shot was fired striking Yim in the shoulder. Yim ran into the nearby woods and was quickly
apprehended by Cheltenham Police.

Yim was transported to Abington Memorial Hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound to his shoulder. The officer was treated at an area hospital for injuries to his head/face and was released.

Yim was released from the hospital to Montgomery County Detectives. He will be charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting Arrest and will be arraigned today at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

The name of the police officer involved is not being released at this time.
