Party Yards, Abington’s larger-than-life display business

Abington’s Party Yards offers fully customizable lawn displays for just about any occasion you can imagine: birthdays, retirements, anniversaries, births, graduations, and more.

Owner Heather Boscaino, an Abington resident since 2007, was in real estate until the pandemic gave her an idea. The mother of three school-aged kids launched Party Yards in November 2021 as a response to our not-so-long-ago socially distanced lives.

“When birthday parties went virtual, I thought these celebration signs were the coolest thing. Birthdays have always been a big deal in my family, and I know how important it is to make people’s big days feel special,” Heather said. “I look at each display as if it’s my child, my mother, my grandfather, my anniversary. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun.”

She noted that yard displays are quite common in southern regions of the U.S., and it’s only been within the last few years that the tradition has moved northward.

The displays are custom-built in front yards, specifically tailored to themes, interests and likes. Out of necessity, installation can be a rather stealthy endeavor to preserve the recipient’s surprise.

Some of the larger displays are as high as seven feet and as wide as 25 feet.

“They make a big statement,” she said. “We do indoor displays as well, but we’re known for the outdoor versions.”

The process begins with a phone or text conversation, and Heather takes the creative process from there. The displays are often left up for 24 hours until she returns for the teardown. Customers’ responsibilities are limited to placing an order.

“Drive-by birthdays and design displays really took off during the pandemic. Now that we’re back in person, people often use them for surprises, party theming and photo ops,” Heather said. “You go out the door and you have a giant sign display celebrating you.”

The business has recently added giant celebration cakes, light up fireworks signs, and “flamingo flockings” to its repertoire. Customers can choose which combination suits their vision.
